'cuz it feels good.............
'cuz it feels good............. yesterday a local restaurant ran a fundraiser for my agency. we made 12K and the best part was everyone there had a grand time. no wait.....the best part was meeting this one lady named Jacqui and she's going to join my board and bring the bank she runs with her. events like this are such a treat. the restaurant is called The Blue Room...if you live around Boston...please go there and tell them Margie sent you......the food in great but the feeling of th place is the real sell...it's just so damn friendly. the wait staff donated their time and then donated their tips. the chef and his line cooks served over 125 three course meals in 2 hours. the owner and his wife were gracious and kind and got all the wine and extras donated. this costs them about 3k to do as the restaurant is not open for lunch. but never once have they made us feel anything but welcome. at the end of the lunch the snow was falling heavily and it took most folks a very long time to get home. for me it was 2 and a half hours for a 20 minute drive. like a giant parking lot with snow. but no one was beeping their horns...no one was acting out.....it was a very long but also very pleasant drive home. and it gave me time to think about just why some people will find the time to do something like this for others.........and why other folks never even think of it. is it because their mamas and papas taught them well? or maybe that they have the true spirit of giving? or it it something more than that? i tend to think that it is more than that. the guys who play handball at the Y come every year. not a single one of them is wealthy. but they come and they laugh and they spend money and they thank me at the end for a chance to help. they're good guys. so i guess what i really want to know is what did you do today to make someone else's' life a little easier to live? and if you didn't do anything.....s'okay...you can do something tomorrow. it feels good.........honest. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

hugs, we. I think you are right, it is something more. Some of the most giving people I know, they don't make a big deal out of giving...they just do it because they see a need. It is all of these folks I am so grateful for... "All you'll get from strangers is surface pleasantry or indifference. Only someone who loves you will criticize you." - Judith Crist, crack film critic

I never was much of a joiner or going for an organized charity thing, but when I come out of the subway on Powell Street in San Francisco, I reach into my pocket and if there's some change I stop in the surge of people rushing somewhere important to drop some in the paper cup the bums hold out - not to help them buy a hamburger or a bottle but to hear their sincere "God bless you." meant not for the quarters but for recognizing their existance as humans just like the rest of us busy busy people. God bless you Oui.

Congratulations on the success of your fundraiser! If The Blue Room is in Cambridge, I've (we've) been there before and it was lovely. Lots of brick and an expensive (but worth it) menu. Having worked in the "development" or fundraising field in the past, I know that this is the time of year that those in certain income brackets like to put in their tax deductible contributions. If that sounds cynical, apologies, but as you mentioned, waitstaffs and kitchenstaffs, bartenders seem to be generous whatever the date and I am glad that you acknowledged them. Regarding your ride home during the storm, a friend up in Boston had an 8 hour commute that day. Burlington to Salem, 8 hours. Hope the New Year brings more funding, more patrons, less need and swifter commutes!
