dance like everyone is watching
dance like everyone is watching cuz they are! last night one of my board members pulled together an event. it was a sort of legacy of dance from the jewish perspective held at her temple and it benefited my shelters. she is an a amazing woman - i've spoken of her before but this time she'd had breast cancer surgery two weeks before this night and still....there she was. flying about the room like a glorious hummingbird, entrancing everyone. i took some friends with me and after we'd nibble away on delicious foods we settled in for the entertainment...not really knowing what to expect. dance is such a beautiful form of expression. one that transforms and the night began with a man from my agency (sneaky devil) and his group of drummers. he drums for so many community events and as the drumming filled the room, people began to move in their seats. jumped up and ran to the open space in front of the group and moved with abandon. the rhythms of the conga seemed a distant point to jewish dance but apparently not as the night progressed. irish step dancing was also part of the web that was woven and as the circle dances began that showed the jewish traditional folk origins, one could see all of the pieces fitting together. salsa music and some dancing lessons in the middle made us all laugh and groan as we struggled to match the teacher's smooth movements. i found myself transformed in the female circle dance at the end as we moved as one large group to celebrate the beauty of women. and the drums beat and the steps felt as familiar as any i'd ever done. alison has this way of making something simple become a celebration. i treasure that in her. my thighs are a bit sore today. but i feel uplifted. like i've been part of something larger than myself. to feel that way in a room filled with people i'd never met is a mitzvah. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

How fantastic! I felt like I was there... I love dance and you can imagine my joy that I raised a dancer and movement and music are a beautiful part of our lives. I love native dance of all kinds.
