gather at the river
gather at the river water of any kind draws me. i adore the ocean. the constant roaring of it and the way the water holds me like a cork. i spent some time there this past week and was reminded of its beauty and power. the waves carry me up and down until i catch one and ride it to shore. i taste like salt and lick myself. M put one toe in and declared it ice water. smiles. lakes are quieter and more patient. they let you slip in and the top layer is warmed by the sun. dive a bit lower and you'll find the coolness you seek and the silky feel of silted water stirred only by fish and small springs. your hair is slick from the water and you feel more like an otter than a girl. we spent hours in the water, the sun was so hot, crawling onto the raft only for 5 minutes or so at a time. exhausted, the ride home is mostly silent except for the sound of the crunching of cones after the ice cream is gone. the river is at my uncle's farm. it's rained a fair amount lately so it's high and moving fast and about thigh deep. we've walked the fields taking pictures and we're broiled red. in we go and the water is breathtakingly cold. fish flash by our legs and we're laughing as we splash each other, the sun catching the droplets and turning them to diamonds in the air. the river smells like rocks and leaves and all that grows around it. we sit and are swept forward quickly by the current. oh to have tubes and ride as far as she would take us. instead, we stumble back up the banks. we both fall and are covered with sand and dirt and have to go back to clean off. more carefully, we wade out and climb the hill towards the barn. we sit and air dry, immediately hot again. you can't be sad in the water. it somehow leaches it out of you. whispers, give it me, i'll take it. and there you are, serene, or playful or bobbing along. how glorious would it be to live by the water? You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

"how glorious would it be to live by the water?" I've pretty much lived most of my life by water--creek/stream water, more so than other formats; though I did spend a fair number of years in rather close proximity with the Pacific, by way of Monterey Bay and Santa Monica/Malibu. The creeks/streams are my kinda waters. The ocean? I miss it only because of them glorious half-nekkid babes. Funny--ya never see half-nekkid babes hangin' out by creeks/streams. Hmmmmm... maybe I oughta provide meself a tad closer proximity with the Pacific. Solar... BTW: Glad you've enjoyed your two freakin' weeks from that previous Monday.

We, you are one entertaining, and very picturesque story-teller. I always enjoy reading your recounts of family days. You really need to write a book. You're too gifted a writer to just let us in blogland be the only ones to enjoy your stories. Think of it this way, it could be a means to fund your centers, if you want. I think you'll make millions, but knowing you, you wouldn't leave your life's work even if you did. But it could make life better for everyone you know, including yourself. You just have such a gift. Thanks for sharing it with us. SNW

I do live by the water, Wicked. Been here almost my whole life (with many times elsewhere); it is home. The cold front & the rain blew thru here this afternoon, so I'm sending you some blessedly cooler weather Chas

I'm a river rat, WE. Grew up in a little town on the Missouri River and learned how to bait a hook and fish for catfish by going with my grandfather. I've also spent much time bass and crappie fishing on midwestern lakes, e,g. Kentucky Lake, Table Rock Lake, Clearwater Lake, Bull Shoals and Lake of the Ozarks. Like Solar, I too have not seen an over-abundance of "half-nekkid babes" with fishin' poles in their hands. But I have observed that they do lounge around reading books and sun-bathing on the sterns of their husbands' bass boats on clear, sunny days. I have never lived on or near the ocean, so I don't know much about buildin' sand castles or diggin' clams!

I loved living in Hilton Head--near the ocean, the rivers, a few streams, the rain, mist, and fog. I can't remember which but there's a language that has 90 different words for snow? We have quite a few to describe different types of water and even more as to how it feels. Never ignore those who care for you you will have lost diamonds while you were collecting stones
