the insomniac's club
the insomniac's club you have to go to the grocery store at 6:30 AM on a SUnday sometimes. it isn't the best time to shop but boy oh boy, it sure is the best time to meet people. every person i saw said hello. some stopped to chat. there was a woman about 80, who never sleeps past 5 and who comes to the Star Market early so she can walk about without being "stampeded". her name is Grace and she has 11 grandchildren and they are all coming over tonight for dinner. there was this young man, sort of dazed looking, trying to find the diaper wipes. Grace and i walked him over there. his new is only 17 days old - they named him David. He is the first , the only grandchild and they had been trying for over three years. Grace has a David too. a woman careened by, carrying on a full blown conversation with her invisible friend - they're apparently quite close - and they decided to have fresh strawberries and cream for dessert tonight. a mom and two - harried, not talking, not smiling, just dragging the through the aisles. the man who makes the sushi was coming in when i got to the deli area. i picked up some olives and we chatted about where they get their tuna. he looked around - then said sotto voice - only buy the tuna on Thursday. i nodded and bought some california rolls instead. only one clerk so the line was long and chatty and we all were happily waiting until the harried mom joined us. she wanted to know why there wasn't another clerk. the line was too long. she had things to do. to a person, we all dropped back, allowing her to go ahead of all of us. and she burst into tears. Grace handed her a tissue and we all murmured there, there and she said, "you're the first people who have been nice to me in weeks, weeks" David's dad was engaging her in some silly talk and i asked if she was a single mom. Her husband is in training, heading to Iraq soon and all of her family live in Texas and she's going back there in a week. Grace asked her and her to dinner - "don't be silly - always room for more , always". i hope she goes. as i finished paying, Grace stood waiting - i was giving her a ride home as she'd bought more than she usually does because usually she has to walk and it gets too heavy for her. i told her i almost always shop on Friday, late mornings and i could come and pick her up. she smiled and said no, thank you, i like the walk and i like to come early like this. when i dropped her to her house, a neighbor was out putting trash into a barrel. He walked on over and picked up the bags to carry them in. Grace said he is out taking trash down every Sunday morning. but i think he is a very good neighbor. i might go back next week. see who's there. catch up with Grace - the pictures of her grandchildren should be ready by then. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

WE...this post made me long for my childhood.....when we played in the streets. Walked to the store...and knew our neighbors by name. What a wonderful morning. Thanks for sharing it. And I sure wish you were my neighbor!

This is what most of America is when we get a chance to breath. We want community and we want to be noticed by our neighbors....Luckily we have this in many parts of Vermont....It's one of the reasons I stay here. thanks for both posts to day, they both were inspiring.

I used to work at walmart. My favorite time to work was the early shift from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00. The nicest people come in at that time. Thanks for reminding me of them. *hugs ya Buttery Delight
