innocent........unless the government wants your ass
innocent........unless the government wants your ass i was listening to a discussion on NPR - the erosion of individual rights under the patriot act. when someone says, go ahead, investigate me, i have nothing to hide - the oft unspoken but intimated sentiment is that those who take offense at such intrusion, do have something to hide. the presumption of innocence is being corrupted by the habeas corpus ruling and what used to be a legal system that had some checks and balances is now one where the scales of justice are weighted heavily against the individual. in addition, the presumption of guilt by dint of one's desire to protect individual civil liberties, serves to tip the scales even further. in a country that has long proclaimed the freedom of its citizenry to congregate, to protest, does the corruption of the structure to ensure those rights cause concern to the majority? The ACLU conducted polls on knowledge of the Patriot Act - less than 47% were clear on its provisions. "While voters are largely unfamiliar with the specifics of the Patriot Act itself, they oppose many of its specific provisions and other government actions since 9/11, including secret detentions of non-citizens, secret search warrants, expanded government access to personal records and requiring librarians to turn over details about Americans' reading habits. On related issues - such as racial, ethnic or national origin profiling - voters are similarly opposed. About seven in 10 voters are less likely to support a candidate who believes the "police should be allowed to stop and question a person because of the person's religion or country they are from." Nearly half are "much less likely" to support this candidate." other polls indicate that the support for the patriot act has decreased from 64% in 2004 to 57% currently but that still means that over half of the people in this country support this egregious abuse of power. in the coming mid term elections, the patriot act and habeas corpus have been overshadowed by Foley's folly. are we so easily blinded to this administration's actions? where is the outrage? how many petitions have you signed? have you called your senator? if the idea of your or , your mother or father, your friend being taken off in the middle of the night, imprisoned without legal representation doesn't scare the shit out of you, i would remind you of Auschwitz, Sobibor, Treblinka, Dachau. all it takes is for good men to say nothing..... You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

It's striking that Habeaus Corpus was one of the earliest "rights" that were considered important for this country. It's the time of year to encourage EVERYBODY TO VOTE. VOTE V O T E

The protection of the individual within the law is a cornerstone of the civilisation we have on offer. We lose such things at our peril, for then there is only power and nothing to have power about. warm xx

First they came for the Jews, and I said nothing...Then they came for the gypsies and I said nothing...then, they came for the Communists and I said nothing...then they came for the Catholics and I said nothing...then they came for the homosexuals and I said nothing....then they came for me and there was no one to speak.... That's the legacy we get when we don't speak up...We all can be made criminals in the governments eyes...our laws are set up that way...we do need to bring back civil liberties...thanks for ranting. All that evil needs is for good people to do nothing. To vote is not enough, to voice ones opinion is not enough, to be outraged is not enough. To be informed and aware of our goverments decisions is important, to be able to see the wider application of these decisions is just as important. It is perhaps more important to be able to hear what everyone has to say and not toss it away out of hand because we assign it to an ideaolgy. All to often people see things as conservative or liberal issues. When I hear people align themselves into distinct camps of thought I see evil. And the evil will be done in the name of this side....or that side, becuase of the inherent "badness" of the other. You say Foley, I remember Franks. And I remember every group has relavent ideas, and danger arises when we can't see reason and truth because it happens to arise from a "group" that we consider ourselves philisophically oppossed to. Lastly(thankfully) our government is a direct reflection of our attention to it. This does not change because one party or another holds the reigns of power, we can trust either side to intentionally and unintentionally get it totally wrong. And even on occasion get it right intentionally and unintentionally.

WE - I have been trying to obtain my file through the freedom of information act for a year now. At first I was told they have nothing on file - which I think must be false since when I traveled to Canada they were too well aware of certain things from 20 years ago. I filed an appeal and another 8 months have gone by - still waiting - I called the local office and was told usually 18 months to get an FOI report. Next best thing to perfect

I am the watcher, I need none of you to watch me. My love of country is beyond question, You are not worthy of its protections. We just need you for your taxes. and the blood of your sons and daughters. You don't even appreciate what we give you. I will tell you what you need to know. I will keep tabs on your life, To bring you down when you try to stir up trouble. I have your IPs, your addresses, your phone numbers, You credit card records, video snippets of your life. and all the pictures you have ever sent online. I wonder how amusing it will be to squash you, with your own half naked pictures, and online sexual ramblings, when you finally get up to take a stand, from behind that video screen. I can come in your house, when you are not there, and not even tell you. to find your smallest indiscretions. You have given away your privacy to me, to protect you, to assuage your fear. You are my sheep, I feed you morsels, and keep you penned, until your hide or blood is of value to me. Keep hanging around a sex site venting your indignation, That will keep me content. Your words are bluster, Thousands of postings here, meaningless to me. signifying nothing. I watch you. You amuse me. Enjoy the bread and circus, I will guard the empire. Just kidding, I'm here to get laid, just like you. life is short, power is fleeting, Looking forward, to you and me meeting.
