going stag
going stag i was driving home after a 13 hour day. i had 5 meetings and two disciplinary actions to deliver and i was tired and going too fast. i came off the highway and just as i would enter the access road to my town, i caught him in my headlights. this magnificent animal. elegant. formidable. grand. i've seen many deer in my life and i'm always taken with the doe eyes and the slender litheness but this....this animal was stunning in his power and his stature. i stopped the car and put the hazards on. he moved with deliberation across the road. not in a hurry, almost disdainful. he stopped about midway and then i saw the doe. she followed quickly when he dipped his horns. i know, not of major import. but oh, how wonderful to end a dreadful day with such a moment of beauty. night blogville. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

They really are amazing creatures. There are so many of them in MN. My little brother took me cross country skiing to a secluded place he knew of. We skied for over an hour in 10-degree temps to get there, but it was worth it. As we came up to a big ridge, he motioned for me to stop and be quiet. We removed our skis and crept up on the ridge and peeked over. There was a very large herd of them -- over 80 in all...we lost count -- all sitting on the south side of the hill warming themselves in the sun. It was a Mutual of Omaha moment.

Wow, I could just picture the stag bowing his head down, as if signaling the doe across the road out of harm's way. This is the season when the deer are roaming more, so we must be more cautious of them on the highways. Thanks for stopping for the stag. He thanks you too.
