"gumped"
"gumped" "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get" well actually, you do if you're like me and poke in the bottom before sticking them in your mouth - but that's off topic. i've been thinking about how i present my opinion to those that have a different one. and i am disappointed with myself. instead of raising the bar to a level of discussion of the issues and how they feed my clearly brilliant conclusion, i tend to get defensive and bristly. sure, it's human, but it's also counterproductive. just because i loathe chocolate covered cherries doesn't mean everyone does. and just because a good caramel makes me swoon, doesn't mean that you have to dig them too. in an age when information (good and bad) is at our fingertips, one can always find a rationale for what one believes and statistics to back it up. doesn't mean it's true. and it doesn't mean that you get to force feed caramels to the cherry lovers. What i loved about Forrest Gump was that he told his truth with no expectation that it would be your truth as well. skier said "what's the fun in that"...having everyone agree with you. and while i concur in theory, sometimes i find it hard to "gump" without wanting the other person to go - oh yeah, absolutely, you're sooooooo right. so, in the interest of fairness, and the pursuit of an open mind......what do you think i think that you think is unthinkable? grins You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

WE....you're breaking your own rules..... and, I can't imagine that there is anything you think that I think is unthinkable.....and, there is nothing wrong IMO about getting your hackles up when someone says something you just know is wrong....or, at least in your heart or mind know is wrong....the fun is understanding your point of view throughly and well enough that you can intelligently have a conversation or even a heated conversation on something you feel passionate about..... I'm sure you'll see some of that come out between myself and my friend Day....I respect him, but disagree and sometimes even vehemently on topics we both have very strong beliefs about....

we... One can believe something, which may or may not be true. Your belief may be a hard thing for someone else to swallow and that's just the nature of belief. However, TRUTH is in a class of its own. I can know the truth and attempt to present it - unsuccessfully, perhaps. Someone may disagree with that truth and, unlike the case of a "belief", I can simply say... "OK." An example - there were any number of people who didn't believe in atomic bombs. However, once that truth was presented to them - in a rather matter-of-fact manner - very few retained their "disbelief". I am not of the mind that TRUTH will, necessarily, be accepted by everyone who is presented with it by anyone else, myself included... yet I know the truth will inevitably be accepted by them - and me. It's a question of timing... and successful presentation, of course. Solar...

I have never gotten the feeling that you were prejudging me or had any pre-conceptions about me - therefor I don't think that you think I find anything unthinkable (for the record - I find it unthinkable to harm a child. I find it unthinkable to find anything erotic about poop. I would find it unthinkable to never again read a book or listen to music and to have to depend on TV for my sole source of entertainment.)

What matters is that we do preserve freedom of thought and speech. One person's utopia is another's hell. As for there being a sole prevailing worldview - I can think of nothing worse. Having said that I would still consider some things to be sacred - the undefilable sanctity of human life, the striving of achieving a world that provides at the very least a standard of health and comfort for all and the ultimate value of love. How we get there we'll argue about for sure, but the moment we won't be allowed to argue we'll already be way off course. warm xx

I wondered who was the one poking the holes in the bottoms. Speaking of bottoms, someone needs theirs spanked.
