Yup. Nothing, and that's all that The Dragon left me.... Peace and love is where it's at.

The poet John Donne wrote: No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." I think the most beautiful thing in all the world is to be "involved in mankind." So, I hope you are never "truly independent." I hope you always care for others and are cared for by them.

I'm now in the classic complementary relationship with someone who is quite different from me, and it is pretty cool. John Lee Hooker Recommended: [blog lucyjane78]

There's a concept I really like....I call it the independent/dependent relationship....This where you have your own life and your own deal going, but you choose to share it with others..... I like my freedom and I don't think any one person fills all needs...at least for me this is true....I just am way to eclectic or electric, depending on your point of view....*g* At any rate, having the freedom to experience new things as well as the safety of warm blanket is a really nice thing...and, an important one at that.... I'm wondering what the next thirty years in our country is going to look like as our children move out and we don't have any real support locally....I suspect it's going to provide some real challenges.... Nice thoughts. Skier

I worry about what skier said in his third paragraph - I don't have *any* children to look after me 30 years from now. And wouldn't want to put that on my nieces and nephews. I mean, it's not like I'm worrying about it every waking moment, but I *do* wonder sometimes. Guess I better start making some very good friends, who are about 20 years younger than me *snork*

Beautifully said!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I will never be truly independent either...I need to be needed. I like to show I am strong enough to take care of myself...I don't NEED anyone to do things for me. But I sure like it when someone is there and says, "lean on me for a little while"... "All you'll get from strangers is surface pleasantry or indifference. Only someone who loves you will criticize you." - Judith Crist, crack film critic

Tsk, tsk, we may have to strip you of your 1970s' Black Panther-supporting, flag-burning stripes. It is my very good friend Janis Joplin, not Janet Jackson, or any other Janet, who sang "Me and Bobby McGee," which happens to be one of my favorite songs. Her version topped the charts to become only the second posthumous number one single in rock & roll history (the first was "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding). In 2004, the Janis Joplin version of this song was ranked #148 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. But, you know who wrote it? Kris Kristofferson. I didn't know that either, by the way. I just know I love Janis! and you

Great post wicked. We are social animals. We are evolved from social animals, and our nearest related species are social animals. Our concept of who we are is defined by language, which is in itself a social phenomenon. There are rare cases of children who are raised by animals in the wild who never become normal functional human beings. As birds are wired to fly, so we are wired to socialise. Taken away from others, part of us goes. Of course there is a politik to all of this. I do think that the highly individualised concept of freedom might create a society where unbelievable success is possible, but the arse end of which is an atavistic, self-seeking underbelly, with no fealty or sense of belonging to a "society" that has simply degenerated into a controlling state. And the problem of "exporting democracy" has become precisely that. In fact what is being exported is the free market, exemplified by Coca Cola, MacDonalds, Exxon and so on, the notion of a better world arising from individualism and no toolkit for building a non-dysfunctional society. I do think that in Northern Europe, and especially in Scandinavia, there is a balance that is struck between the success of the individual and the success of the society to which they belong. I am always struck in my sport by "The Fellowship of the Wing." Free-flying is almost the ultimate in individual experience. There is a huge sense of freedom in the sky. But back on the ground there is the deepest sense of camaradie, the kind you'll see among soldiers. I'm off to fly shortly, but I'm equally off to banter with friends and share time and experiences. That's actually part of the fun. warm xx
