down to the sea again............
down to the sea again............ "could we go to the ocean? i think i need that. " His reply "Oh-tion, Oh-shun, Oh-shin t'is, matey. Looking at the word "ocean" I had one of those strange moments when you look at simple word and it's as if you've never looked at it before in your life--ohmygawd is that how you spell that? why? and then I noticed some interesting onomatopoetic things about the English word for that infinite thing that's out there, you: 1.The"O". The "O" is like a gasp of wonder and awe or a holy salutation--Oh God--Oh Ocean--the way you feel when you see it again after a long time--the wonder of it. Seeing the "O" I actually saw the wide circled disc of the ocean to the horizon, the deep-blue, alive, moving expanse of it, and I knew I was having an authentic moment and visual image because I immediately felt nauseous (another funny looking word) 2.The "cean" part of the word has a lovely feel to it, like flowing curves of the waves, the endless waves. (also doesn't help with the nausea.) did i mention my Man is a bit of a hypochondriac? 3.The "cean" part evokes the primal feeling of the deep, miraculous mystery of creatures we once knew and from where we once came--cetaceans--or more properly, sea-taceans--whales, porpoises, dolphins and the like. 4.The whole word--"Ocean"--I've just noticed now--has a strange, foreign, and ancient, Greek-like look about it. No wonder: ocean from the middle english ocean, from the latin oceanus, and from the Greek, Okeanos, a river thought of as encircling the earth. Yeah, I wanna go see that, too. " "thank you my love, my heart" You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

Mmmmm...I love the ocean...it is my place to recharge...nothing more magnificent than a summer sunset on the ocean... Thanks for bringing to mind those memories... Ocean derives from the ancient Greek "Okeanos," which was supposedly a circular saltwater river going around the known world of land. The "O" has circularity but I can't hear the "S" of waves upon the shore (many greek words end in "-os" ..... in fact all male nouns, and that's a lot). Interesting that the Romans did adopt it to become the softer "Oceanus." And even more interesting is ocean in Sanskrit, the world's most ancient and most onomatopoeic language has the ocean as "Sagara," and I can hear the water running across ancient sands. It also created the word "Aum," the resonance of the universe itself. warm xx
