less is more
less is more The Lord's prayer contains 56 words. The 23rd psalm contains 118 words. The Gettysburg Address contains 226 words. The Ten Commandments contain 297 words. The U.S. Department of Agriculture directive on pricing lettuce contains 15,269 words. from New York Times in a recent meeting, a facilitator spent a good hour reading to us the words we had received via email a week prior and that we had taken time to review and amend. at the end of the hour, he then began to re-read the freaking thing and ask for suggestions along the way. "excuse me?" "yes, Margie?" "didn't we already submit changes?" "yes" "and those changes have all been included in this draft?" "yes" 'i move to accept the draft as written pending agency review to ensure their comments and changes have been included" "second" "second" "second" "opposed?" silence and we all left You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

And how long did the facilitator stand there with his mouth agape??? Fewer words are almost always better...depending, I suppose, on the words...

At least if they're going to be long-winded, by golly, make it interesting and fun! The government can never be either, it should have been said in as few words as this... The price of lettuce should fall between 25 cents and $2.00. If prices rise beyond that point, the price of lettuce may rise with the current CPI. (27 words and it could have been shortened). I worked for the government for too many years, no one knows how to say ANYTHING simply or succintly. Maybe that's where I learned to ramble...LOL.
